Account

How can I sign in?

With your email and password, with Continue with Google (where it is enabled), or with a one-time sign-in link: choose Email me a sign-in link on the sign-in page and we send a link that expires in 15 minutes. Once you are signed in you can also register a passkey under Settings → Passkeys to sign in with biometrics or a hardware key.

I forgot my password.

Select Forgot password? on the sign-in page and follow the email. If you would rather not reset it, use Email me a sign-in link instead — it signs you in without a password.

How do I change my password?

Go to Settings and use the password form. After you set a new password you will need to sign in again on all your devices.

Can I change the research details I gave when I signed up?

Yes. Everything from the sign-up questionnaire — position, institution, country, ORCID and keywords of interest — is optional and can be edited on your Profile page. Your keywords of interest are what tailor the papers under Recommended for you on Home.

You can delete individual papers from your library at any time. To permanently delete your account and its server-side data, contact us from the email address on the account and we will take care of it.

Can I install Literia as an app?

Yes, in browsers that support installing web apps. When your browser offers it, an Install app item appears in the user menu (your avatar, top right). The installed app opens straight into your library.

Data sources & coverage

Where do the papers in search come from?

Paper details in Literia are drawn from open scholarly metadata — paper records carry information from OpenAlex and Semantic Scholar, and arXiv identifiers where a paper has one. Papers you upload or import yourself are stored in your own library.

Can I read papers that are behind a paywall?

Literia does not bypass paywalls. When a search result has an openly available PDF, a Direct PDF link is shown. For papers you have access to through your institution, download the PDF and upload it, or save it with the Literia Web Importer while you are on the publisher's page.

A paper I need doesn't show up in search.

Try describing it differently — search takes a plain-language description, so the paper's main contribution often works better than an exact title. If it still isn't found, add it yourself: upload the PDF, or import it from the publisher's site with the browser extension. See Add papers to your library.

A paper's title, authors or abstract are wrong.

Metadata comes from the source the paper was imported from, so mistakes there can carry over. Please send us the paper and what is wrong so we can look into it.

Privacy

Who can see my library and notes?

What you put into Literia is yours. Your library is tied to your account, and we never sell or rent your data. Read the full Privacy Policy for details.

What does the browser extension read?

Only pages on recognised academic publisher sites, and only to identify the paper you are importing. On every other website it stops immediately and reads nothing. It has no advertising, analytics or tracking. The Privacy Policy explains each permission it asks for.

Where is my data stored?

On Literia's own servers: paper metadata in a database and PDFs in object storage, protected by access controls and encrypted in transit over HTTPS. Your papers stay in your account until you delete them.

Can I delete my data?

Yes. You can delete individual papers from your library, and you can ask us to permanently delete your account and its server-side data via Contact. Removing the extension clears its local cache and stops it from collecting anything.

Limits

What files can I upload?

PDF files only, from New → Add paper → Upload PDF in your library. The maximum file size and page count are shown in the upload area. Scanned PDFs (page images with no selectable text) aren't supported yet, and password-protected PDFs need the password removed first. See Add papers to your library.

Is there a limit on questions, searches or reports?

PDF uploads have a daily limit; once you reach it, you can upload again the next day. No other usage limits are shown in the app today. If you hit an error that looks like a limit, please tell us what you were doing.

Does Literia work with papers that aren't in English?

The interface is in English. Support for papers in other languages depends on the paper; if a paper doesn't read or answer well, please let us know.

Troubleshooting

The reader says there's no PDF for this paper.

Literia only opens PDFs that are openly available or that you added yourself, and it does not bypass paywalls. If you can get the PDF — from the publisher, your library or the authors' page — paste its link or upload the file with Add paper in your library, or save it with the browser extension while you are on the publisher's page. See Add papers to your library.

The reader says it couldn't open the PDF.

Select Try again to reload. If it keeps failing, go Back to library and reopen the paper; a paper that was just added may still be processing. If the error persists, contact us with the paper's title and the text under Technical details.

The HTML view won't load or says the conversion failed.

The HTML view is generated from the PDF on our servers, which takes a little while the first time you open a paper. If you see "PDF conversion failed on the server", try again later and keep reading in the PDF view meanwhile — highlights and Q&A work there too.

I keep getting signed out.

Literia renews your session in the background. If renewal fails — for example after you change your password, or if your browser blocks cookies for this site — you are sent back to the sign-in page. Allow cookies for Literia and sign in again. Signing in on one tab signs in your other open tabs too.

Search shows "No papers match these filters".

Every result was excluded by the filters you set. Widen the year range or select Clear all filters. If you got no results at all, rephrase your description — see Find papers.

I see "You're offline".

Literia needs a connection to load papers, run Q&A and sync your library. Reconnect and the page picks up where you left off.
